Homeowner's Insurance Claims

Top 5 WORST myths told to homeowners...

Myth: Get multiple estimates.

Fact: It's often very difficult to get more than one estimate. Contractors must manage their time as a resource, not to mention the fixed cost associated with obtaining an accurate roof measurement. These sunken cost, make contractors scrutinize every call, as not to waste money and the company's resources.

Also: Many Home Insurance policies explicitly state, ' the insurer is only obligated to pay the lowest estimate turned in by the insured'.  This in no way insures the quality and reliability of the work in question.

Myth: Your roof is just old.

Fact: Age isn't the only factor in the condition of your roof. It also depends on weather conditions and other factors. The materials used in asphalt shingles are selected to withstand decades of "normal" weather erosion. If you're not sure about the condition of your roof or if it needs to be replaced, call a professional roofing contractor for an inspection. They can tell you if there are any leaks or repairs needed before you make any claims for damage from wind or hail.

Myth: The damage is under the deductible.

Fact: The deductible amount varies depending on the type of insurance policy and what kind of damage occurred (wind vs. hail). Also, always keep in mind that the cost and scope of the repair is not to be determined by your insurance company, but a qualified licensed professional in the field or trade. Similar to Medical insurance or Auto; you want/have a right to a qualified professional to diagnose the best course of remedy or repair to restore you to your " pre-loss' condition.

Myth: The adjuster can close your claim.

Fact: A claim made on a contract between two parties is not close until both parties come to a agreeable resolution to the claim or it falls outside the statue of limitations.
